Day 1 Last night, i only slept for 3 hours as i was super excited and hyper. I awoke and reached school by 6.25am, struggling to get a hold on my bag, pail, newspapers (for pei er) and sleeping bag. I looked like a clown juggling for an act. Coincidentally, i met Sok Kuan, Wan Ying, Wan Tching who arrived a few seconds earlier than me and the other commitees. I would have liked to run there and scream "HI" but excessive luggage prevents me from doing so.
We waited until there was quite a number of commitees, then we proceeded to do our own work. I helped Wan Tching prepare the hall for the opening ceremony as my job has to be done at a certain time. Talking about commitees, this is my first time being one. I will never forget the day when Sok Kuan handed a list to me and Wan Ying to tell us about this learning camp. In that list, I am listed under Discipline and Member's Affairs. Now I have another job, which is to be a facilitator. I'll have to thank Vei Lynn for this job. Vei Lynn if you see this thank you so much for this oppurtunity. Lets continue the story..
So, I helped Wan Tching and the others till 7 am, time for registration. Wai Yi, me and Jie Hui were in charge. We registered their names and gave them their nametags and St John lyrics. We were also in charge of telling them where to put their luggage according to their respective groups. They started teaching St John song. Commitees were introduced after the song was taught. On stage, i realised that the number of members was less than my worst expectation. Pn.Tan, our divisional officer and our organizing chairperson,Sok Kuan made a short speech. Sok Kuan also informed participants about the rules and regulations and whistle blows.
For icebreaking game our head programmer Pei Kai asked every group to make their own group cheer and elect their leader. His witty remarks and song singing made laughter erupt from every corner. I am in charge of group 5, Explicit, light purple nametag. My group members consists of 2 boys and 3 girls, Seng Hou, Zhen Hou, Zee Hsien, Bik Yeng and Lee Huong. Seng Hou was elected as leader. Our group cheer was given by Zhen Hou, which is "we are the clearest, we understand the most" If anyone has seen the weird clapping thing after cheering, I suggested that but it didn't have the effect i wanted. Ah well.. it was fun though. 2 remaining groups were left to compete with each other. The leaders of the groups stood out to do the challenges given by the other leaders whose group have passed. There are a few interesting scenes, like doing chicken dance and dancing "Sorry sorry". The leaders didn't know how to dance "sorry sorry" so a few of the commitee members (Brenda, Wai Yien, Elaine) stepped out to demonstrate. The leaders still didn't get it after the demonstration, so Pei Kai stepped out, demonstrated and danced with them.
Station games begun at 8am. There were 8 stations. First station is Soft Toys, Wan ying's station. This game includes throwing adorable soft toys into baskets. There are 5 soft toys, a choc monkey, a dog, "Sheep", winnie the pooh and an elephant. My group came in last. Second station is Trust Walk activity.Participant's legs were bound together using triangular bandage and they have to collect pens without touching obstacles. Pei Er is in charge off this. My group came in last at this too. Third station, Lick Yin's, is Transportation Express. Participants had to use different types of transportation to transport a "casualty" till the end. My group got second last as the group in front of us went to the toilet. Fourth station is Jie Hui's Spongebob. This game is played by crossing obstacles with a wet sponge in your hand to transport water. When two person reaches the ending point, they do the recovery position. Fifth station, Vei Lynn's Questionmark. One person in the group is chosen to be the "casualty". The casualty is allergic to the floor so the other group members have to carry them in order to not touch the floor. The casualty has to pick up a crumpled paper ball and hand it to Vei Lynn to answer first aid questions. My group got easy questions, e.g In AVPU, what does A mean? Sixth station is Brenda's station, Water and Ping Pong. Participants have to hold a cupful of water with a ping pong on top to the finishing point. Seventh station is Stranded Island, Wan Tching was in charge. Participants have to make clothes and a flag(using newspapers) for their leader. They have to find their leader who will be hidden later on. Facilitators can play in this game, so i had fun too. We made an armour and a miniskirt for Seng Hou. Zhen Hou made an ultraman mask. Wan Ying, Jie Hui and Pei Er happened to pass by, so they joined my group to play. A few of them had a brilliant idea, that is to make a bikini for Seng Hou. I was already cracking in laughter when I saw him wearing the ultraman mask, so imagine how hard i laughed at this suggestion. My hyper friends laughed with me, even Wan Tching did as she passed by. I helped Wan Tching hide Xin Yu, the group leader of Discriminating. She had a good idea: hide under the teacher's table in a classroom. That was a genius idea as her group failed to find her after searching for about 20 minutes. That time, my group were already halfway playing at Brandon's station- Red light Green light. I had to bite my lip in order to not tell them the answers.
Chicken dance-ed before lunch. Facis had to go to canteen early to arrange the seating and food, so me and the other facis were busy grabbing food and putting them onto the table of our group frantically as time was short. For lunch we had nasi lemak and plum juice. About the plum juice, I'm not sure if it is plum juice..but it tastes like plum juice, so I'll just assume that it is.
After lunch, we played World Trade Game, a complicated game that Pei Kai had to explain twice in the meeting before i could understand it. We were seperated into 6 "countries", developed countries and not so developed ones. The developed countries had more technology, such as scissors and rulers and less resources (paper) while the not so developed ones is the opposite. There were sudden scenarios happening every 10 mins. Facis are required to play, and my group is India. My best friends Pei Er, Wan Ying and Jie Hui joined in this 18 person group as they too, wanted to play. I'm extremely happy they came because i have friends to talk to and they were very helpful, especialy in sudden scenarios including transportation. Comp squad members mah.. Sadly, Wan Ying was "dead" and was sold to Japan. (not literally, i meant Melanie's group) So, me and Pei Er ad to carry Jie Hui all the way to the toilet outside dewan and get half a cupful of water to add $10,000. Then, we played table talk. Me, Wan Yiing, Pei Er and Jie Hui joined late but still got splashed.
4pm was bathtime. Me, Wan Ying, Jie Hui, Queenie and Pei Er grabbed our pails and towels and hurried to the bathroom. Choosing bathrooms was hard. Would you rather go to the one outside Dewan that had orange coloured water or the one beside bilik pengawas that has cockroaches once in a while? Me, Pei Er and Wan Ying took the second choice. Terrible choice. As Pei Er and Wan Ying was bathing, I was waiting for the person in the cubicle between theirs. I heard a high pitched scream, scuffling, the people inside pushing and pulling that cubicle door at the same time. Out came two girls. I saw the cause of it. COCKROACH.. and it was heading towards Wan Ying's cubicle. I was like " WAN YING THERE'S A COCKROACH HEADING TOWARDS YOU..." " *high- pitched scream* where? where?" " oh wait.. it crawled back" I admit, i did scream too. Who wouldn't?? (except Pei Er and Jia Yinn who were peacefully bathing..) The cockroach dissapeared somehow, and i was paranoid with fear while bathing. The three of us looked like ah-sam after bathing with towels draped on our shoulders. Had banana cake for teatime.
After a game, it was dinner time. Dinner was a packet of chicken rice each. Handphones were handed back to participants. On 6pm they had their theory trial exam. I'm glad I could help out on that time. Now, I experienced what it is like to be an examiner. Me, Vei Lynn, Melanie, Han Leon and Ming Yii helped take care of the junior's trials as Sok Kuan had to go to both classrooms. I noticed that most of the juniors got a question wrong, that is: what does CPR stand for? The correct answer is Cardio Pulmonary RESUCITATION, instead, they put a similar answer, Cardio Pulmonary RESPIRATION. Guess they'll have to watch out for similar answers.
8pm to 10pm was time for practical lessons. Sok Kuan and the other seniors taught choking and CPR. I was called out to be a "casualty" once by Sok Kuan to perform Heimlich Manoeuvre. I was glad to help, but boy that tickles so i was tying to choke back my laughter while Sok Kuan was demonstrating. We had a first aid lesson by Doctor Benjamin Lim later on.
After the juniors went to sleep, the commitee members had a post-mortem.Tn. Sim said it was the most honest post mortem he had ever attended. Whilst i spoke i was really nervous as it was my first time attending a post mortem and being a committee. Luckily looking straight at Wai Yi and Brenda helped and the tension in me released a bit.I felt my eyes prick with tears as Pei Kai and Brenda spoke. We were awake untill 1 am, in which we had a fire drill for the participants. The seniors had a hard time waking them. "If there was a fire, they'd all be dead then" we whispered in barisan to get a scolding to Pei Kai "do not turn your heads or talk in barisan!" The juniors had to watch us kawad. We were also very blur then, and mistakes were made.
Time for our little surprise! We had planned a surprise party for sok Kuan. When she saw a table with candles around it, a small cake in the middle, and all of us she burst out into tears. We sang a Korean version of "happy birthday" while Tn. Lian blared the song in his car.
At night, Me, Wan Ying and Pei Er grabbed a soft toy each ( i had the PUPPY!!!) and slept on the table. I only slept fot about 20 min untill i was awakened by Wan Ying. We went out and chatted with the other committees. Pei kai told 2 ghost dtories and half of the commitees went in to sleep, so me and Wan Ying slept again. We were awakened by a guard who chatted with us. He kept emphasising about his daughter who once studied medical and is a lecturer now. (hey! i can memorise it.. XD)Finally, FINALLY he went back,'cuz my eyes were going to snap shut if he doesn't. Slept for about 10 minutes, then Pei Er woke me up and dragged me inside dewan to sleep. Lucky she did, as the air con was cooling at that time. After a sleepless night, me and Wan Ying managed to get about 1 hour of sleep before we automatically woke up on 4am and prepared for Day 2.
Day 2 After we woke up the participants, they washed up and we had morning exercises organised by the comp. squad NC team and Brenda. The 6 hyper girls got us exercising and at the same time, we were constantly laughing. (hands up, elbows together, butts up, butts up and the shaking butt part i forgot..) Had to run 2 times around Dewan and two times around carpark. After a tiring 2hrs and 30 mins we finally got to eat breakfast. Breakfast consisted of roti canai and hot, sugary tea. yumm..
The members had their practical trial exam after breakfast while the facis and cadets cleaned up dewan. We had first aid lessons from Doctor Benjamin Lim once again. He continues his lesson from yesterday while we wrote down notes. The second part though, was kinda akward.. like Pei Er mentioned in her blog, we were taught about HIV, how it is transmitted and how to prevent it. We were separated into 4 groups and he gave each group a carrot. I was handed one. Everyone was like *???* but we waited for him to explain. Then, he gave the carrot holders a condom each. We was like "OMG".. I kena also.. I was desperately pleading Pei Er and Debra to open it when Doctor Benjamin told us to. Luckily, Debra did. We were taught how to put them on the carrot. I didn't touch it, but according to the others its oily. I was kinda ok with it as it is always good to learn something new. And useful. Pei Er was like "NOOOOO....." and hiding behind my sleeve so it was hard to throw the carrot on her lap. Anyway, i learned alot of useful information and I'm really grateful to Doctor Benjamin for teaching us. (pardon me if you find it offensive..)
After photo session, it was closing ceremony. Congratulations to Ka sen and Connie for getting the best camper award. 15 minutes before camp ended, Corporal Ng made a short speech. He pointed out that the St. John flag was upside down. I did not notice it throughout the camp. Corporal Ng asked the committees to go onstage. " DOWN 20 TIMES" he said. "Girls face backwards, OC count". My hands were starting to turn to jelly by the time we got to 9, its a miracle i lasted. i think we deserved it as we did not notice the upside down flag and a flag hung wrongly is dishonour. Had a group-by-group photo session.
Dragged my luggage and went back home by 1pm after helping to clean up. I hope there will be a camp next year and there will be more participants. I had alot of fun and gained experience this year. Thank you each and every one of the commitee members and participants for letting this camp be a fun experience for me.
